The Meltdown Roadmap
A tantrum has a goal and stops when the goal is met. A meltdown has no goal — it stops when the body runs out of fuel.
By the time it's happening, the thinking part of your child's brain isn't in the room. That's why reasoning fails, why threats escalate, and why "look at me when I'm talking to you" makes everything worse.
Meltdowns move through five phases, and each one needs something different from you. Give the wrong response at the right moment and you extend the storm. Give the right one and you shorten it — and protect the relationship on the other side.
Inside the 14 pages:
- What a meltdown actually is — biology, not behaviour
- The five phases: Rumble, Rupture, Recovery, Repair, Reflect
- A page on each, with what helps and what makes it worse
- 12 phrase swaps for the hardest moments
- The hard questions: "am I letting them get away with it?", "why only at home?", "there's never a warning", "I keep losing it too"
- Two fill-in pages: your child's rumble signs, and a pattern tracker
- A cut-out fridge card with all five phases
Who it's for: parents and carers of neurodivergent children — ADHD, autistic, PDA, sensory kids — and anyone parenting through regular meltdowns.
